Commissioned Wearables

I periodically accept commissions from independent creators to produce wearable props for use in video and photo projects. Wearable pieces pose the unique challenge of designing for look, durability, functionality, and comfort. These pieces often require many iterations and creative solutions to make sure factors such as fit and stability are meeting the commissioner’s expectations.

This project example is from a recent commission where I was asked to adapt armor pieces from reference images and create a light-weight costume piece.

Here are the first and the final versions, side by side.

Version 1 was a good starting point, but needed improvement.

The design needed to be more accurate to the inspiration images, the weight needed to be reduced, and the way the prop attached to the arm needed to be re-worked.

Building Version 2

I started by adding an a “pin and hole” system to the gauntlet to help keep the two halves aligned while it was being worn. I also added strap loops to enable an adjustable and more comfortable fit. It took a few iterations, but I eventually found a good balance of accuracy and wearability.

I am very proud of the final piece and of the all the design challenges that I overcame to reach the finish line.
